SAFEGUARDING TRAINING
Physical and Emotional Abuse
It is important to remember that active children will often have accidental injuries that are of no real concern. For example when playing sports, using equipment, riding bikes etc. Think about children you know ad what sorts of accidental injuries they may have e.g. scratches, bruises and sometimes broken limbs or fractures.
Consider where on the body active children are likely to get injuries? Possible answers could be shins, knees or elbows. Where would injuries be that might worry you? Possible answers could be under arms, between legs or on the torso. When a child has an accident, for example falling off their bike; I think about what information would satisfy you that the injury is accidental. Normally the story will match the injury and what you know about the child’s activities and ability. It is important to always listen carefully to what the child says.
You may be worried because the injury:
- is not in a place where children normally accidentally injure themselves
- is inappropriate to the child’s age
- does not seem to have a satisfactory reason
- is the latest in a list of injuries of concern
and/or
- parents or carers do not seem to be concerned
- parents or carers cause concern with their attitude towards their child
- parents or carers give an explanation that does not match the injury
- parents or carers delay or do not seek medical attention
Emotional abuse is the persistent emotional maltreatment of a child such as to cause severe and persistent adverse effects on the child’s emotional development. It may involve conveying to the child that they are worthless or unloved, inadequate, or valued only insofar as they meet the needs of another person. It may include not giving the child opportunities to express their view, deliberately silencing them or ‘making fun’ of what they say or how they communicate. It may feature age or developmentally inappropriate expectations being imposed on children. These may include interactions that are beyond the child’s developmental capability, as well as overprotection and limitation of exploration and learning, or preventing the child participating in normal social interaction. It may involve seeing or hearing the ill treatment of another. It may involve serious bullying (including cyber bullying) causing children frequently to feel frightened or in danger, or the exploitation or corruption of children. Some level of emotional abuse is involved in all types of maltreatment of a child, though it may occur alone.
You may be worried because you think the child;
- finds it difficult to make friends
- is unaware of boundaries of acceptable behavior
- is withdrawn
- is unable to play in an age appropriate way
and parents or carers: lack time, or are unable to play with their child
- physical or emotionally push the child away so they give up looking for attention
- cricitise the child and seem unable to praise or give warmth
Sexual Abuse
Sexual Abuse involves forcing or enticing a child r young person to take part in sexual activities, not necessarily a high level of violence, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening. The activities may involve physical contact, including assault by penetration (for example, rape or oral sex) or non-penetration, kissing, rubbing and touching outside of clothing. They may also include noncontact activities, such as involving children in looking at, or the production of, sexual images, watching sexual activities, encouraging children to behave in sexually inappropriate ways, or grooming a child in preparation for abuse (including via the internet). Sexual abuse is not solely perpetrated by adult males. Women can also acts of sexual abuse, as can other children.
You may be worried because you think the child shows:
- mood swings, tantrums or aggressive outbursts
- anxiety, insecurity, low self-esteem
- eating, sleeping and other disorders
- inappropriate knowledge of sex for the child’s age
- self-harm, suicide attempts, misuse of substances drugs or alcohol
- has lots of money or expensive items with no explanation
- running away, bizarre behavior
- has lots of money or expensive items with no explanation
- difficulty in making friendships with other children
Remember that sexual abuse is probably the best kept secret in the world and when you are concerned about a child in this way think about:
- what is it really concerns you
- when did the concern first arise
Responding to concerns
Remember that you may have a very small piece of information that could be very important to the statutory agencies who are trying to see the whole picture of what is going on in a child’s life
Possible indicators of concern may be in a number of ways, including.
- behaviour
- appearance
- their relationship with their parents/carers
- member of the public
- an anonymous person, by person, email or face to face with no name given
Concerns may also be raised about a child by a:

Physical Touch & Intervention
Even well-intentioned physical contact can be misconstrued. Adopt the principal of limited touch. If you need to touch, tell the child before you do so and expect that all physical contact may be open to security and be prepared to explain actions.
- do not ‘horseplay’ with children
- be sensitive to issues of gender and culture
- treat children with dignity and respect and avoid contact with intimate parts of the body
- encourage children to undertake self-care takes independently
- if regular physical contact needs to occur for medical or sports reasons, this should occur with established school protocols and be agree beforehand
- conduct activities where they can be seen by others
- never use physical contact as a form of punishment
- try to diffuse situations before they escalate
